Genders

Gender has become a sensitive topic to talk and write about within recent years so I hope this post isn't offensive in anyway as I share my personal beliefs. I'm hoping to come across in a loving and understanding way, and I invite those who read this to share insights in the comments as this is a safe place for all.

In today's society, there are social norms, ideas of how a gender should be and act. For example, females are thought of to be more mature, aware of things, nurturing, and communicative where as males are thought of to be active, protective, spatial, and myopic. These are all things that we're told as a society as to how a male and female should be like and what they can and can't do. To a certain extent, I associate my thoughts and behaviors based on these "social norms" as I do believe that men and women have different roles to play in society. We were made different for a reason, to complement one another. If we were all the same and had the same capabilities, then what's the point of being male and female.

The point of being different from one another is very beneficial was discussed in class this week. With that, the topic of marriage was brought up and that it's healthy to have differences. Every person is brought up differently and has a certain ways of doing things. For example, my teacher said that his wife was brought up in a very masculine home where everyone was very independent and my teacher has a more compassionate and service oriented personality, together he was able to bring out the woman in her and she was able to bring out the man in him. Although they are opposite genders, they were able to help one another develop into their full potential of their gender roles. I have come to learn this for myself in my own relationship as I just recently got engaged. My fiancé and I could not be more opposite than one another, let me tell you. He is loud, energetic, and social where as I am more quiet, reserved, and independent, but together we help balance one another out. I help him calm down in certain situations and he helps me get out of my comfort zone and live a little. Together we have so much fun and are learning each others needs and how to best serve one another.

To go along with the fact that we are all raised differently, has brought up the theory as to why there is gender confusion. In today's society, there are over fifty possible identifications a person can be. I personally don't understand how this is possible as scientifically speaking there are only two genders, male and female. I understand that there might be tendencies to like your own gender, but I don't understand how that changes your own gender. One of the most common explanations to same sex attraction is that a person is just born that way. That this attraction is even genetic or inherited. This idea causes people to think that there's no choice in their actions or agency in who they love. I personally don't know where my stance on this is as I think people do struggle with the same sex attraction as they wish they didn't have those tendencies, but then there's others who are very open about it and express themselves very publicly. I don't think it's some type of health disorder, I think for some it is very much a choice.

Along with choosing on how to affiliate yourself, I think a persons growing up has a part to play with this decision along with the social norms brought up earlier. If a person doesn't act exactly how those social norms are laid out to be, then that person is automatically labeled as something they're not which then makes that person second guess on how to identify him or herself. This idea was brought up in class, and I think I agree. If a man likes or enjoys lets say the color pink, which is a color that a woman is usually associated with, then he is judged and called a sissy or other names that he does not identify as just because of that small difference. There are also family dynamics that may play a role in identifying a sexuality such as parent attachment issues or sexual abuse. Those are just a few possible factors.

Overall, I believe that there are only two genders, male and female, and that we each have our own role to play in this world. We're each unique and have our own abilities to bring to society. We can bring our differences in ideas and actions together and create a better and happier world if we're able to congregate in a loving way.
